USPTO Announces Cancer Moonshot Challenge!

In continuing with its efforts to help accelerate the progress of cancer research, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has announced the Cancer Moonshot Challenge, which is a contest inviting the public to use patent data to reveal new insights on cancer research and treatments through visualization and interactive mapping. Using data provided by the Office, contestants are challenged to create and illuminate new trend lines and interactive mappings of innovation with visualizations for all types of cancer treatments and diagnostics by combining the Office’s data with other unique data. The purpose of the challenge is to develop interactive visualizations and stories that can help reveal new insights to guide public policy and research to achieve the goal of doubling the rate of progress toward a cure.

Submissions should include an interactive visualization, as well as a short story explaining how to use the visualization and its significance. Judging will be based on the following criteria: creativity & innovation, evidence base & effectiveness, value to public, usability, and functional product. The Office is awarding cash prizes for the top three entries, with First Place receiving $5,000. Submissions will be accepted from 12 a.m. ET, August 22, 2016 through 5 p.m. ET, September 12, 2016, and winners will be announced on September 26, 2016.

An online informational session will be held August 25, 2016 at 3:00 PM EST, which will provide contestants with an opportunity to ask questions about the challenge and the Cancer Moonshot Patent data set.
