Today the Supreme Court granted certiorari on an appeal to decide whether the federal government’s ban on registering offensive trademarks violates the First Amendment.

Today the Supreme Court granted certiorari on an appeal to decide whether the federal government’s ban on registering offensive trademarks violates the First Amendment.

Although the trademark at issue in the case is THE SLANTS for a rock band, this ban was also recently invoked to cancel the WASHINGTON REDSKINS registrations. The case is Lee v. Tam, case number 15-1293, before the Supreme Court of the United States.
